mid-autumn festival

I am very lucky to live in China, an amazing country with an incredibly rich culture. Although we see images of a China that is modernizing quickly, the country and its people are deeply tied to customs, traditions and celebrations that have been around for thousands of years. This year I wanted to raise awareness of the Mid-Autumn festival amongst the students and staff in our school, and I decided to launch our first language and culture-based inter-house competition. I found this fantastic website by the British Council that is full of ideas and resources for celebrating this festival. I downloaded and adapted the British Council PowerPoint and shared it with all the advisory groups in the Middle School along with a video that one of my Chinese colleagues shared with me. The students had one week to design a moon cake and as you can see from the gallery above, the entries were incredible. I'm always blown away by the creativity and artistry of our students. The top prize winner earned herself a box of delicious moon cakes as well as 50 house points, and I had many positive comments from staff who were pleased to learn more about the history and customs surrounding this festival.
