We are back in Shanghai and excited to start another year at SCIS. As we flew into Shanghai we were treated to the most incredible view of the city. In the picture below you can see the clouds hung like cotton wool balls over the city and if you look carefully at the centre you can see the extra bright lights of the Bund and Pudong skyline.

Today is the last day of school - hooray! To celebrate we had a local jian bing vendor come into to provide us with a breakfast pancake. The pancake is made using dough on a round hotplate, to which is added egg, a sweet brown paste, chilli sauce, coriander, chives, pickles and a crispy savoury cracker. So delicious!
I love this restaurant, they have branches all over Shanghai. They do the best soup dumplings 小笼包 (xiao long bao) and all their food is just so clean and fresh.
This last weekend I was out and about in my old neighbourhood in the French Concession visiting my favourite green tea shop. While I was walking along XiangYang Lu I took some photos of the beautiful tree-lined street which is full of interesting shops.
I can't believe that I have lived in China so long before trying bubble tea! Today one of the Mandarin classes order bubble tea to school and I tried my first cup. It's delicious! Below is a milk tea menu. On the menu you can see information about the options for sugar, ice and the size of the tapioca balls that you want. Today is the Dragon Boat Festival (Duan Wu Jie) in China. This morning we went to our local park and saw many people out enjoying the one day festival. The park is important to the local community and you see people from all walks of life enjoying the green and tranquillity。 Below is a glimpse at the scenery and activities happening in the park this morning.
Today I'm at SCIS in Pudong undertaking a three day category 3 course on inquiry in the MYP. To welcome us this morning the lower school music teacher and her students presented their dragon and lion dance which they originally performed for Chinese New Year. Take a look at the wonderful presentation below. This weekend my family visited Suzhou, a short 25 minutes away on the fast train from Shanghai. We visited the canals, traditional shops and famous gardens. Take a look at the pictures below. One of the things that really strikes me about living in Shanghai is that there are so many extreme contrasts in so many aspects of life; there are freezing cold winters and the boiling hot summers, there are beautiful traditional shikumen housing in the alleyways of the French concession surrounded by gleaming skyscrapers, there is a great deal of poverty as well extreme wealth and often you see traditional customs against a backdrop of modernisation. The latter is what we saw this weekend in the new shiny IAPM mall in central Shanghai which is full of designer brand shops and swanky restaurants. Check out the beautiful Chinese traditional music and dress below. |
